What to do if you overate this past weekend

Whether you were celebrating Cinco De Mayo or The Kentucky Derby…you might be feeling guilty or shameful after overeating this past weekend. Thoughts swirl in your head…

“Omg I’m still full from last night.”

“Wow, i really can’t be trusted around chips and salsa.”

“Ugh, I ate too much this weekend.”

“I definitely had too many margaritas yesterday.”

When your inner critic is loud and the guilt starts taking over, it’s so so easy to fall into that shame spiral. I’ve been there too.  I promise you there is another way, but it’s going to take some work. Here are three tips to stop the spiral and exercise your self-compassion muscles.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LANGUAGE:

Get curious about the language you use in your head. How do you *feel* when you use the word “overeat?”

LET YOUR BODY LEAD THE WAY:

Often the stories we tell ourselves come from the state of our nervous system. This is an excellent time to pause and check in with your body. What do you notice?

Another tip to help increase your capacity for curiosity and self-compassion…

 REFLECT ON THE ROOT:

🔎 Who or what taught you that overeating is wrong?

🗣️ Whose voice is that? (It’s usually not yours 😉)

You deserve to be seen, heard, and known. As a Registered Dietitian, my primary job is to provide a space for you to show up as yourself and to allow all parts of you to be seen. If you are feeling stuck, confused, and disconnected, I would love to support you. It is possible to STOP the cycle of undereating and overeating, at your pace, rooted in your values.
